Cochlear implants are devices implanted in the inner ears of profoundly deaf people to stimulate the auditory nerve electrically and thereby provide them with some measure of hearing. This laboratory uses rats to address questions about fundamental aspects of such stimulation that for technical or ethical reasons cannot be addressed in humans. Anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioral methods are all employed to study the effects of stimulation through permanently implanted intracochlear electrodes. Suitable projects for students are not always available, but inquiries are welcome at any time.
