A selective with the state apiary inspectors. They require students to have some honey bee experience with preference to students who have taken the Tufts Honey Bee Medicine Selective. The time that they would get the most concentrated experience inspecting imported and commercial bees would be April and late June. A week long rotation is preferred although other lengths of time can be discussed. Students should not have a known allergy to honey bees. Protective clothing and hive tools are provided.
The goal of the selective would be to provide the student with hands on experience inspecting bee colonies for evidence of disease or other problems, such as queen loss, that may require a management intervention.
